How does the recognition of foreign qualifications work?
There are three types of recognition of foreign qualifications:
Automatic Recognition: This method offers a generic recognition of a foreign higher education degree or diploma, provided that its level, objectives, and nature align identically with Portuguese bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees or higher professional technician diplomas. The Commission of Recognition of Foreign Degrees and Diplomas must list the foreign degree or diploma for this type of recognition. It must be issued by an institution recognized or accredited by the relevant authorities in the country of origin.
Level Recognition: This approach enables the recognition, on an individual basis, of a foreign higher education degree or diploma by comparing it to Portuguese academic degrees or higher education diplomas. The aim is to determine whether the foreign qualification corresponds to a certain level of academic achievement in Portugal.
Specific Recognition: this type of recognition allows an individual analysis of the level, duration, and syllabus of the foreign qualification, typically within a particular area of training, branch of knowledge, or speciality.
Individuals can refer to the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES) website for further information and guidance on this process. The DGES is the regulatory body overseeing these recognition procedures.
