Learning Portuguese

Becoming proficient in Portuguese is a crucial step towards integration into the community. Various educational options, both in-person and digital, make learning accessible and offer opportunities for studying, living, and working within the community.

Portuguese Host Language (PLA)

Portuguese Host Language, previously known as Portuguese for Speakers of Other Languages (PFOL) or Portuguese for All (PPT), aims to address the Portuguese language learning needs of migrants in Portugal. These courses certify levels A1 + A2 (Elementary User) and B1 + B2 (Independent User) as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF).

Mastering the language enables better interaction within the community, easing entry into the job market and asserting social rights.

The High Commission for Migration provides two learning tools:

Instituto Camões

Instituto Camões was founded to promote the Portuguese language and culture globally. This institution offers a range of courses and methodologies designed to teach and officially recognize proficiency levels in the Portuguese language.

SPEAK

SPEAK brings together newcomers and locals in the same city through language groups and community-organized cultural exchange events. Participants learn from each other, explore shared interests, and make new friends, fostering a sense of unity and breaking down barriers and prejudice in their city.

For those in Fundão, the SPEAK Facebook Group is a valuable resource.
