The Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum implements national and European public policies on migration, asylum, and equality. This includes but is not limited to, regularizing the entry and stay of foreign citizens at the national level and implementing public policies aimed at integrating ethnic groups. The agency also manages and appreciates cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity.
Thus, the AIMA is responsible for the following:
Granting extensions of stay, residence permits, renewals of residence permits, residence cards, and permanent residence cards for family members of European Union citizens who are third-country nationals, as well as certificates of permanent residence for European Union citizens. AIMA also handles residence permits for British citizens benefiting from the Agreement on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community. When necessary, AIMA requests an opinion from the Borders and Foreigners Coordination Unit (UCFE) as per the law;
Granting travel documents to foreign citizens in the national territory, ensuring national control and registration of issued travel documents;
Recognizing the right to family reunification;
Giving opinions on consular visa applications and within the scope of Portuguese nationality processes;
Establishing, instructing, and deciding on the procedure for granting asylum, subsidiary protection, and temporary protection.
