Health Services

The healthcare system in Fundão includes a range of services, from primary forms such as health centres to more complex facilities like the hospital. It is organised to serve residents of all nationalities and address their health-related needs.

Health Facilities

Fundão is served by Centro Hospitalar Cova da Beira, which has a physical presence in Covilhã and Fundão. As the region's highest National Health Service (SNS) unit, it is equipped to handle severe emergency cases, complex chronic follow-ups, and surgical interventions. In contrast, health centres, the basic units of the SNS, offer initial care to citizens and are dispersed throughout the parishes of the municipality of Fundão. What are your rights and duties if you need medical care?

If you are unwell and require medical attention, you can receive assistance at a health centre or hospital, especially in emergencies, through the National Health Service. If you lack a residence permit, access to health services in your area is possible with a residence certificate issued by the Parish Council. Children and adolescents in an irregular situation are entitled to healthcare with the same rights as those in a regular situation.

What should I do in case of a medical emergency?

For urgent cases like severe trauma, poisoning, burns, and cardiac or respiratory crises, it is crucial to seek assistance at a hospital promptly. In emergencies, alert the competent services by dialling 112, which also facilitates patient transportation. Assistance in several languages is available through 112.

Is there a helpline for health-related inquiries?

You can contact Linha Saúde 24 at 808 24 24 24.

What if there is a denial of healthcare?

In case of refusal, you can file a complaint with the National Support Centre for Migrant Integration (CNAIM) or the  Health Regulatory Entity (ERS). These entities manage complaints in such situations.

What is a Patient Fee?

It is a fee that must be paid for each healthcare appointment. In the case of temporary stays, if the migrant's country of origin has a healthcare agreement with Portugal, the same conditions and moderate fees for access to healthcare apply as they do for national citizens. However, if the country of origin lacks a healthcare agreement with Portugal, the total cost of healthcare provided will be charged. It is important to note that there are no charges for specific cases, including maternal and child health, reproductive health, vaccination, and care for children and adolescents.
