Fundão is one of the European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity

Fundão is one of the nine European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity 2023 awarded by the European Commission, having been chosen for its "efforts to strengthen diversity and inclusion in its community". Fundão won the Bronze Award in the category of local authorities with less than 50,000 inhabitants, and it was highlighted that Fundão has very important initiatives underway for migrants, with a Centre for Migration and intercultural mediators. Other initiatives address gender issues with a particular focus on responding to gender-based violence, along with a range of social services provided to older people. In this category the Gold Prize was awarded to the Municipality of La Zarza, in Spain, and the Silver Prize to the city of Lubin, Croatia.

For Paulo Fernandes, Mayor of Fundão, "the distinction by the European Commission of Fundão - Terra de Acolhimento is a great recognition for our land, for our people and for all those who seek us to live, to work or simply to seek a better life". The European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Award marks the launch of European Diversity Month, which is celebrated annually and raises awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in our societies.
